The seed of Local Roots Landscapers was planted early in the spring of 2003. A handful of landscapers began to talk about creating a more holistic landscaping business that combines the principles of worker cooperatives with the sustainable practices of native plant landscaping. By early April, Local Roots Landscapers incorporated as a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) and, taking shovel in hand, began installing their first project.
Meredith Cooley, Founder & Lead Designer
Meredith was fortunate to be raised by parents who were nature enthusiasts. She grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, but spent her summers in rural Vermont where her days were passed mucking about in streams, scampering up rock faces and collecting wild flowers. Meredith moved to Minnesota to attend Macalester College, and gradually began to put down roots in the Twin Cities. After exploring a variety of employment avenues in her early twenties, she began working for a small, sustainable landscaping business and found it to be a natural fit. In 2003 she rounded up a few friends and native plant enthusiasts and created Local Roots Landscapers. Now in her nineteenth year of landscaping, Meredith still greatly enjoys the process of transforming yards into artful and sustainable spaces.
When not working she enjoys paddling her sea kayak in Minnesota’s plethora of lakes and rivers as well as hiking, traveling, and x-country skiing. Meredith also appreciates all animals, wild and domesticated.
